Ok, I'd like to say the reason I haven't posted for a while is because I have been working on my book —the one I started in 2009, the one this blog is all about.
Well it is true and I am happy to say it feels like I am on the home straight, but I am wary of making such claims as I have done many times in the past.
.
One thing you learn when you work on a long term writing project is that LONG is the operative word. Just when you think you are done, your select group of readers will tell you in no uncertain terms that you are not.
It can be a bit depressing (understatement) to realise there's a lot more work to be done.
My advice is — have a little weep, a little moan and groan to some writing friends, then jump right back in. Thank goodness for their input, as it is the difference between presenting the world with an unfinished or finished book.
That's why the list of thank-yous in the back of published books is so LONG. (There's that word again)! And why it sounds like an academy award speech let run for ever. The thing is you are grateful, so grateful for all those eagle eyes on your work.
A major breakthrough came recently when I started mocking up a cover and realised the title had to go. My Mother, Duras has meaning for me, but in putting it on a cover page could I see it would not mean a thing to a reading audience.
So now it's...
The cover won't look like this of course, but it is a useful exercise to
gauge actually how your title is going to sit. Of course if you can use photoshop or Canva you can go to town, but even in microsoft word you can get the idea. Imagine it on the bookshelf in your favourite bookshop.
I also had the idea to include some posters from the time.to intrpduce each section of the book. Here are a few I've found.
Of course it's easy to think all this activity is taking me away from the desk and finishing that darned thing. But when it is getting close it is good to be thinking about how you want your book to look, even down to the font you would like to see it in.
Now that's another worm hole for another day!
