April 4, 2014 will mark the centenary of MD's birth in Gia Dinh, Saigon,Vietnam. then known as Indochina. It is a glaringly obvious ( somehow I hadn't realised this until now) good reason to get this book out there asap (we all need reasons)!
While telling a student about JM Coetze's unusual structure in Diary of A Bad Year (three separate narratives that run horizontally across the page), I wondered about doing something similar with this book. And that perhaps it would be good to get in touch with a couple of potential publishers now to alert them of the upcoming manuscript.
So
My Mother, Duras
by Jan Cornall
This intriguing memoir stitches the author's long term admiration of the French writer Marguerite Duras into an exploration of mothers and melancholy, as she travels the Mekong from Vietnam to Cambodia, following the scents of Duras' Indochine childhood.
Length 50,000
Ok that's enough, I can come back to it later to embellish... get back to the writing Jan!
